Waist-hip ratio (WHR) calculator

The WHR calculator calculates the ratio of waist circumference to hip circumference.
Thanks to the Talia-Hips calculator, we will find out what type of obesity we have, what is the risk of hypertension, coronary diseases, stroke, atherosclerosis and diabetes, and we will learn the average standard WHR for our gender and age.

To get the result, enter the size of waist and hip circumference in centimeters and select the gender. If you want to check what is the average standard WHR for sex and age and on this basis calculate the disease risk in the Criteria, select the "Relative to age" option and enter your age (this option is intended for people over 18).

Waist Measurements:
WOMEN: midway between the lower edge of the costal arch and the upper edge of the plate of the ilium, on exhalation.
MEN: Approximately at navel level, on exhalation.

Hip Measurements:
WOMEN: at the greatest hip circumference.
MEN: At the level of the top of the femur.

WHR (Waist to Hip Ratio) is used to define the type of obesity and the distribution of adipose tissue. Obesity is broadly classified into two main types:

"apple" type (abdominal, visceral, android obesity) - more common in men and women after menopause. Much more dangerous to health as the risk of many diseases increases, incl. cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and type II diabetes,

pear type (gluteal-femoral, peripheral, ginoid obesity) more common in women, with accumulation of fat around the hips and thighs, less risky in terms of disease risk.

The differences in the prevalence of the above types of obesity, depending on gender, result from the different distribution of adipose tissue conditioned by hormonal and genetic factors. The WHR index is not adequate for pregnant women.

The WHR index at the level of 0.7 in women and 0.9 in men strongly correlates not only with overall health but also with fertility.
Women with a WHR value of around 0.7 have optimal estrogen levels and are less prone to serious diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and ovarian cancer. Women with a high WHR (0.80 and above) are significantly less likely to become pregnant than women with a lower WHR, regardless of their BMI. Men with a WHR of around 0.90 are more fertile and have a lower risk of developing prostate and testicular cancer.

The Waist-Hips index was found to be more reliable than BMI (body mass index) in determining the risk of disease incidence. It may happen that two women may have different body mass indexes but the same WHR or they may have the same BMI but different WHR.

Some psychologists believe that the Waist-Hips index has a significant impact on the perception of female attractiveness. Women with a WHR of around 0.70 are usually rated as more attractive by men from Indo-European cultures. According to research, depending on the country and ethnicity, this perception can vary from 0.6 in China, South America, some African countries to 0.8 in Cameroon and among the tribes of Tanzania.
