Shortening (reducing) a fraction consists in dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number other than zero. By shortening the fraction, we need find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator of the fraction. \( \frac{a}{b} = \frac{a : c}{b : c} for c ≠ 0 where c = NWD\) e.g. \( \frac{4}{10} = \frac{4 : 2}{10 : 2} = \frac{2}{5} for NWD=2\).
Fractions are irreducible when we cannot find the greatest common divisor greater than 1 for both the numerator and the denominator.

Expanding the fraction is the multiplication of the numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number. We use the expansion of fractions most often to bring the fractions to a common denominator

Dividing fractions

The result of dividing a fraction is the product of the first fraction times the reciprocal of the second fraction. We multiply the numerator of the first fraction times the second and the denominator of the first fraction times the numerator of the second.
